Update on Imaging Services at Barts Health NHS Trust, February 2022
- We would like to remind GP colleagues that patients must present to a Barts Health hospital within three weeks of their X-ray referral.
- Existing referrals between three weeks and six months old will continue to be honoured, however requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by our clinical teams to ensure an X-ray is still required and clinically valid.
- Any X-ray request more than six months old in which the patient has not presented to the trust must be resubmitted.
This guidance applies to all hospitals within the Barts Health group: Mile End, Newham, St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London and Whipps Cross.
For core imaging services providing non-urgent radiography; including CT, MRI and Non-obstetric ultrasound (NOUS) there remain challenges in treating patients within six weeks of their referral.
However for NOUS, the waiting list is now back to the size it was pre-pandemic and operational hospital teams are working to ensure all patients waiting are seen in the next few weeks. Please continue to refer to the ultrasound referral guidance ahead of placing a referral.
We would ask GPs consider the current waiting list challenges when making new referrals, however please be assured that urgent and cancer patients will continue to be prioritised.
We are very grateful for your support and look forward to working together to get our patients the care and treatment they need as quickly and as safely as possible.
Ultrasound referral guidance for GPs has also recently been updated and the new guidance is attached to this communication.
