NEL Targeted lung health check programme - BD and Tower Hamlets - Update

As a reminder, Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) is a free MOT of the lungs for people aged between 55-74, who are current smokers or who have smoked, and is by invite only.

We are piloting this in north east London in Barking and Dagenham and Tower Hamlets (based on smoking data). The programme is on track to go live from July onwards.

Engagement is taking place with primary care, as well as Healthwatch, Public Health, local authorities, community groups and voluntary organisations, and a media campaign is planned to raise awareness amongst our residents.

Scanner locations

We are pleased to confirm the location of the scanners as follows:

Barking and Dagenham: Barking Sporthouse and Gym, Mayesbrook Park, Lodge Ave, Dagenham, RM8 2JR

Tower Hamlets: Mile End Park Leisure Centre and Stadium, 190 Burdett Rd, London E3 4HL

Please note that spirometry has been removed from the current pathway, based on national advice (unlikely to be part of eventual national screening programme), and costing.

Summit study

We are aware that some patients have previously been invited for lung checks as part of the recent Summit study. Even though there was excellent participation from GP practices, there was only a 10% uptake by patients.

Therefore, it important for residents to come forward for a Targeted Lung Health Check when invited (even if they have previously been invited as part of Summit), as there a lot of ‘at-risk’ patients out there.
