Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) - New Pathway

The GDM pathway has changed with immediate effect.

WEL CCG, Barts Health and the GP Care Group had been working on making postnatal testing available more convenient and closer to home for women with GDM. As such, postnatal OGTTs at 6 weeks in hospital are to be REPLACED by HbA1c around 13 weeks after delivery in general practice. The change to the GDM pathway was due to be implemented from 1st May and was about to be communicated to practices. However, due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, the Royal London Hospital must urgently stop all post-natal GTTs occurring in the hospital due to this outbreak.  There will be national guidance on this shortly.

The new pathway will be implemented from now rather than 1 May 2020.

For the first 3 months – i.e. from April – end June the post-natal HbA1c can be done at 6 months rather than 13 weeks.  This will be reviewed at the end of June.
