BHRUT current capacity challenges for 2ww referrals

Breast 2ww referrals

Due to the increase in referrals and continued workforce capacity issues, the breast service has reinstated triaging of all 2ww breast referrals based on the criteria that was previously agreed with our GP colleagues across BHR.

The breast consultants will review and triage all 2ww suspected breast referrals based on the information GPs have provided on the referral.  Your patient will be advised of the outcome and given a date to be seen in 4-6 weeks.  The triage will be based on the following criteria.

  • Patient must be under 35
  • With Breast pain symptoms
  • No family history of breast cancer/lumps
  • No previous breast issues

Please be assured the Trust has put in additional resources within the Cancer referral office (CRO) to manage any patient queries regarding this process and your patients will be given a contact number should they have any queries or in the event their symptoms change.

The Trust will also be responsible for safety netting these patients and they will continue to be tracked until they are discharged or treated.

Dermatology 2ww referrals

The Dermatology service have been receiving a very high number of suspected cancer referrals and will be actively seeking to put on additional capacity to meet your referral demand.  Please be advised that your patients being referred may have to wait longer than 14 days to be seen for their first appointment, however, please be assured we have put additional admin resource in Cancer referral office to manage your patients queries regarding their future appointments.

Thank you for your support during this challenging period and your help in advising your patients of this prior to referral would be helpful.
