BHR - Simple wound care pilot launch

From 1 October 2022, NHS North East London in partnership with local GPs and North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT), will be trialling a new service in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge for patients requiring simple wound care.

The aim of the community simple post-op wound care service is to provide a high quality, clinically safe and innovative service provision within a primary care setting, enabling continuity of care and consistent review. The service aims to improve patient experience and reduce attendance at Accident and Emergency (A&E) or Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs).

The service also aims to relieve pressure of simple post-op wound care on GP practices and provide continuity of care however practices will be expected to continue to manage wounds that do not meet the criteria of this service.

Service provision will shift from a weekday service to a seven-day bookable service.  The service will operate Monday – Friday 8am-6.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm.

The service will see:

  • Post-surgical sutures and clips removal (‘post-op’ for patients aged 16 years and over)
  • Acute wounds
  • Superficial skin ulcer management
  • First degree superficial burns
  • No under 16’s
  • No leg ulcers
  • No chronic wounds ( >6 weeks)
  • No complex wounds

Patients will be able to book and cancel appointments online or over the phone using the 10:8 booking system. We will be circulating a patient information leaflet shortly that can be given to patients who attend the practice.

We also have a dedicated email address where GP providers can send their feedback on this service nelondonicb.bhrswcservice@nhs.net
