Arrangements for Barts Health imaging referrals during current pandemic peak

Arrangements for Barts Health Ultrasound referrals during current pandemic peak (Replaces advice sent to GPs on 12/01/2021)

Because of the pressures of the current pandemic surge, we are having to scale back our ultrasound outpatient/GP services to Major Incident level.

All referrals will be triaged by a radiologist, and those triaged as “urgent”, falling in the ‘P1’ category (clinical need for scanning now) will be scanned. Other patients will have scheduled appointments cancelled and will be held on a generic waiting list. Patients will be rescheduled, taking account of their triaged priority, when we move into the recovery phase following the surge.

Referrals will be prioritised based on the clinical indications provided on the referral and in line with the Royal College of Radiologists guidance.
There are already large numbers of patients on our waiting list following the first surge, and we continue to ask for your support by limiting referrals to those you consider to require scans urgently.

We will relax these constraints and return to a normal service as soon as we possibly can as circumstances allow. However, it is inevitable that there will be considerable delays for some patients as we go into the recovery phase. We hope we will be able to tackle this issue with your continued support when the time comes.

Thank you for your support and assistance during this challenging time.
